"Without a Shadow of a Doubt."
"If there is even the shadow of a doubt of innocence, the death penalty should never be an option."
But yet, it still was.
Blood spilled on concrete designed to enslave black folk,
Lethal injection laced with the disease of no grace,
Though there was a seed of doubt of innocence planted in the soil of this nation, the waters of compassion did not run deep enough for the seed to sprout.
I've never known a seed to take 24 years, never to grow.
You reap no reward when the seed is mishandled and planted in fallow ground.
And now we stand yet again in a place with no shade, the burning sun of injustice intentionally reminding us that we were never intended to find shade from trees rooted in sinking sand.
Marcellus Williams, though you valued the lives of others leading up to your final day, I'm also sorry that the power of 35,000 pens was not enough to save your life.
